Our super-connected city region is home to Boeing’s first European-based production facility and Rolls-Royce’s Advanced Blade Casting Facility. We also host many suppliers to the aviation industry, built on manufacturing and innovation expertise.
Aircraft manufacturers are working with the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) to reduce the cycle time and the costs of producing aerospace products while improving quality and performance. In addition to the manufacturing of precision parts, our region has many aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.
Vision for a Connected National Economy realises the Doncaster Sheffield’s Airport’s potential as a major catalyst for transforming the North of England, creating new employment, housing, tourism and aviation capacity
The Vision sees the creation of a highly sophisticated Aerotropolis in South Yorkshire with the airport’s 1600-acre site, known as Aero Centre Yorkshire, becoming a central hub. The ‘airport city’ would help transform the North of England, creating 73,000 new jobs for South Yorkshire and provide exciting advanced manufacturing, logistics and aviation-led innovation opportunities. It is anticipated that the Vision would deliver £3.2 billion GVA per year by 2048 across the region.
“This is a Vision with a central pillar that delivers air connectivity, new housing, highly skilled employment, tourism and better rail connectivity at exceptional value for money. It is straightforward to build and deliverable in 5 years. It is of national significance for aviation and the economy, particularly the North, and we want to see it realised as soon as possible. This is required beyond what Heathrow expansion will deliver, with a range of benefits for the North and East of the country.” Robert Hough CBE, Chairman of Peel Airports.
