It’s set to be one of the most significant and large-scale logistics projects in the UK, if not the world.

And now Sheffield City Region can announce that eight sites within the region have been selected for the long list of sites for the creation of logistics hubs for the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

This is more sites than any other Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) area of the UK, with locations being considered including Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the Laing O’Rourke Design for Manufacture and Assembly Facility in Bassetlaw.

These are part of the longlist of 65 Logistic Hub locations – off-site centres for construction and manufacturing which will help the airport deliver its expansion plan.

Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield City Region LEP, said: “The fact that we have more sites longlisted than any other LEP area in the UK is testament to the excellence we have here in logistics and our reputation for being the home of UK advanced engineering, manufacturing and construction., with an enviable network of local companies built on rich legacy of innovation.

“We are a super-connected city region, at the centre of the national rail and motorway network. Working in partnership with the public and private sector, we are achieving transformational change and building a thriving, successful, economy.

“Our vision is focused on rebalancing the North- South divide and spreading the benefit of major UK infrastructure projects to regenerate our local area. I know the quality exists here to make a success of significant investments such as this, and am hopeful that we will be selected as one of the final four locations.”

Four selected Heathrow Logistics Hubs across the UK will participate in offsite construction of the third runway, pre-assembling components of the expanded airport before transporting them in consolidated loads to Heathrow.

The expansion of Heathrow is the first major infrastructure project in the UK to utilise off-site construction in large-scale use of logistics hubs.

Sheffield City Region submitted bids because we believe we are a site of national logistics and engineering excellence and have the knowledge, infrastructure and quality to deliver.

Site options put forward include locations with rail connectivity to London and other regional logistics hubs, while there are also six world-class universities and research capabilities within a one-hour drive. These include the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing; the leading engineering research and training facility in the UK.

Rachel Clark, director of trade and investment at Sheffield City Region, said: “This is fantastic news for the City Region and further proof that we are at the forefront of the field when it comes to logistics.”
