Plans for New Theme Park Near Rotherham take Leap Forward
Plans by a Derbyshire-based amusement park firm for another multi-million pound resort in South Yorkshire look set to be given contingent endorsement.
A year ago, Gulliver’s, which is headquartered at Matlock Bath where it operates Gulliver’s Kingdom, submitted plans for Gulliver’s Valley Resort – a £37 million amusement park that would be based on the previous Pithouse West opencast colliery site, close to Rotherham.
The recommendations are set to go before planners on Thursday, February 16 and have been recommended for provisional endorsement. Gulliver’s Kingdom in Matlock Bath was established in 1978 by Ray Phillips. He initially made it as a model town for his young kids.
Today, the business is still owned by the Phillips family -alongside Matlock Bath, it has sister amusement parks in Warrington and Milton Keynes. The majority of its parks are for kids three to 13. Its most recent improvement would be a year-round attraction, including rides, attractions, play and indoor fun, and an assortment of accomodation options.
Up to 215,000 sq ft of buildings could be developed on the 240-acre plot of land.
