2014 – A tour de Force for Sheffield City Region

Published 22nd December 2014 at 11:01am

The year 2014 will be remembered for the world class spectacle that was the Tour de France.  The people of Yorkshire came out in force to celebrate the excitement of the race as cities, towns and villages embraced the world’s most famous cycling race. It was regarded as the “grandest” of Grand Departs by Tour De France Director Christian Prudhomme and gave the region a £102 million economic boost.

This economic success has been mirrored in the City Region’s growth. The Enterprise Zone (EZ) is growing from strength to strength.  State-of-the-art R&D facilities continue to feature prominently on the EZ. The forthcoming £45 million aerospace facility, Factory 2050, and proposed £90 million Glass Academy cement the City Region’s reputation as a centre for world-class advanced manufacturing.

The City Region was delighted to announce a 164 acre expansion of the EZ at MIPIM 2014, including a new site at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.  Markham Vale continues to attract a steady stream of businesses including Holdsworth Food, Gould Alloys, inspirepac and others.

The thriving rail sector is assured continued success with news that the National High Speed Rail College will be sited in Doncaster, placing the City Region at the forefront of rail technology.  This builds on a year of expansion encompassing a £70 million investment by Hitachi, a new UK HQ for Rhomberg Sersa and a substantial expansion of overhaul services by Unipart Rail.

The Logistics sector is also experiencing significant growth.  Top news stories included M&S taking 647,000sq ft and Great Bear 412,000sq ft expanding into Sheffield.  Next continue to develop their substantial footprint in Doncaster with plans submitted for a 900,000sq ft facility in November.

Of course there were many other 2014 successes including theXLN expansion into Sheffield, but alas, not enough space to list them all here, read more.
