Bed spring manufacturer Leggett and Platt is planning a £5.7m site expansion which will take the investment in its Barnsley plant to almost £12m in two years.

Last year, the US-owned company invested £6m in new technology at its 200,000sq ft site at Park Springs, Grimethorpe.

Now, with support from Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre as part of the Enterprising Barnsley programme, the company is eyeing further growth.

Management say the expansion, which is planned for later this year and subject to Regional Growth Fund funding, will increase capacity and create 50 jobs over the next two years.

The divisional headquarters is one of two UK manufacturing sites operated by the L&P Group whose worldwide sales last year topped $3.7 billion.

Leggett and Platt relocated to its £12m purpose built base on the site of the former Grimethorpe Colliery in 2009, and strong performance throughout the recession has fuelled growth.

Business specialists appointed through the Enterprising Barnsley programme have been working with Leggett and Platt’s senior management team for the past few months and a Regional Growth Fund bid, which will underpin the expansion, has just been submitted.

Darren Rhodes, Managing Director, explained: “Since 2012 we’ve increased our workforce by 50 and the new expansion will see further recruitment. We’re very much committed to staying in this area and are forging links with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Park (AMRC) at Rotherham who we’ll be working with for one-stop recruitment and training. As the technology in our machines increases, so does the need for skilled workers and talented apprentices and that’s why we plan to work with some of the brightest sparks in industry.”

“The support from Enterprising Barnsley has been nothing short of superb. In a very short space of time we’ve received support with our RGF funding application and the business coaches we’re working with are supporting the senior management team very effectively.”

Kevin Steel, Business Development Manager at Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre, which is providing business support through the Enterprising Barnsley programme, said: “Leggett and Platt has a proud history in Barnsley employing generations of local people. It is fantastic that Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre is able to support Leggett and Platt as it evolves and grows.”
