Invest in Chesterfield message taken to Westminster

Chesterfield is a key partner in Sheffield City Region.  The town’s marketing campaign, Destination Chesterfield, has been highlighted by the Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP as a good example of the public and private sector working together and taking responsibility to attract investment and promote their town.

The praise came at an exclusive Invest in Chesterfield event which was hosted by Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins in Westminster recently. The event, which was organised by Destination Chesterfield, was designed to showcase the town to potential investors and property developers.

At the event, members of the media, property developers and retailers gathered to watch the film below about Chesterfield, highlighting the town’s opportunities and future growth potential. They also heard from Toby Perkins MP, Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield and developer of the town’s £340 million Waterside scheme.

Toby Perkins MP commented: “Our event in Parliament was a great success and showcased these opportunities to business leaders from across the UK.  Crucially, it also demonstrates the political support for Destination Chesterfield, with other local MPs, the Council and Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna, all in attendance to support the event.”

Toby added: “Chesterfield is a fantastic destination for business investment.  Our town centre in particular has so much to offer businesses.  Retail occupancy has actually risen during the recession and has one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country.  This is supported both by large high street names like Debenhams, TK Maxx and Hobby Craft but also be a thriving traditional market square – one of the largest in the country – and an historic Market Hall which has just received a £4m refurbishment.”

Following the Westminster event, more than 80 of the town’s business leaders and Chesterfield Champions gathered in the Market Hall’s refurbished assembly rooms for breakfast on Thursday 28th November, to hear the Invest in Chesterfield message.

Speaking at the Assembly Rooms’ event Mr Swallow said: “Chesterfield was very well received at Westminster. It was an excellent platform for us to put the town in the national marketplace and show key investors that we are one of the UK’s brightest and most up and coming investment locations.”

Ben Ward, Senior Development Surveyor at Henry Boot, which is developing Chesterfields Markham Vale Enterprise Zone told the assembled guests that interest in the 80 hectare business park was strong. Already 16 deals had been completed at site and the new Ready Egg building is due to be completed in June 2014 bringing more jobs to the area.

After viewing the short film, which was shown at the Westminster event, the assembled local businesses were united in their praise. Paul Cater of Chesterfield Workwear based on Whittington Moor said: “I thought the presentation was fantastic. The imagery was really good and the message and information we got was really clear.”

Since launching the town’s marketing campaign in September 2010, against the backdrop of a cool financial climate, Chesterfield has shown growth across the board and bucked the national trend for declining high streets with unemployment decreasing by 0.5% during this time.

Funding for Destination Chesterfield has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Chesterfield Borough Council and the local business community until December 2015, ensuring the marketing campaign’s on-going success.
